Measure and Order Tiles for Your Project
In Ghana, tilers charge by the square meter of the space, so it’s essential to know this before the tiling process begins. Most tilers struggle to accurately calculate the quantity of tiles needed for a space, often resulting in either underestimation or overestimation.
Frequently, tilers recommend tiles to their clients, and some even overestimate the quantity required. Consequently, I frequently encounter customers returning purchased tiles, expressing dissatisfaction with the excess quantity. This blog aims to address these issues and provide valuable insights to help reduce such occurrences.
Choosing the appropriate type and size of tile is paramount for your space. With my extensive experience in the tile industry, I’ve noticed that customers lack sufficient knowledge about the various types and sizes of tiles available.

Why Tile Size Matters
Tile size plays a critical role in the overall look and functionality of your space. Larger tiles can make a room appear more spacious, while smaller tiles are ideal for intricate designs or small areas like toilet and bathrooms. Choosing the right size ensures not only aesthetic appeal but also ease of installation and maintenance.
Measure Your Space Accurately Before purchasing tiles, you need to measure your space precisely. Follow these steps:
- Measure the Dimensions
Use a measuring tape to calculate the length and width of the area to be tiled.

Take measurement
Multiply the length by the width to get the total square area. For the purpose of calculations, it’s simpler to measure the length and width in feet or meters.

Step 2: Account for Obstacles Deduct any areas that won’t be tiled, such as doorways, permanent fixtures, or built ins.
Step 3: Add a Waste Factor: Always add 10-15% extra to your total to account for cutting, mistakes, and future repairs. Example: If your floor measures 10 feet by 12 feet: Total area = 10 x 12 = 120 square feet.
Add 15% for waste: 120 x 1.15 = 138 square feet. You’ll need 138 square feet of tiles.
Common Tile Sizes in Ghana: Tiles are primarily categorized into wall tiles and floor tiles. The most common sizes of wall tiles in Ghana are:
25*40 wall tiles (suitable for kitchens, bathrooms, and small areas) and 30*60 wall tiles (ideal for outdoor spaces and large areas).
30* 30 floor tiles are ideal for bathroom floor tiles.
40*40 floor tiles are categorized into unpolished, rustic, and polished tiles.
50*50 floor tiles are ideal for living rooms, dining rooms, and bedrooms.
60*60 floor tiles are ideal for large spaces such as large living areas.
60*120 floor tiles are also suitable for large spaces.

Wall vs. Floor: Floor tiles are thicker and more durable, while wall tiles are lighter and easier to install vertically.
How to Calculate the Number of Tiles Needed: Once you know the total area and have chosen a tile size, you can calculate how many tiles you’ll need.
Step 1: Determine the square area per box of tiles. To calculate the total square meter of tiles per box, multiply the length and breadth of one piece of the tile, then multiply the product by the number of tiles in the box.
Step 2: Divide Total Area of space by square meter of tiles per box Divide the total square meter of the tiles per box by the total square meter of the space to get the total quantity of tiles that would be needed.
Example: To calculate the quantity of 60*60 tiles for a room of 20 feet by 15 feet.
Room size in square meter = 20 feet * 15 feet * 0.09 = 27 square meters
Square meter per box of 60*60 (cm) that has 4 pieces of tiles per box = 60cm * 60cm * 4 = 14,400 square cm ( Divide by 1000 to get result in square meter) = 1.44 square meters
To determine the quantity of tiles for the room: = 27 / 1.44 = 18.75 Boxes Approximately 19 boxes (without waste factor)
Pro Tips for Buying Tiles Buy from the Same Batch: Tiles from different batches may have slight color or size variations. Check Return Policies: Purchase from a supplier with a flexible return policy in case of overestimation. Order Extra for Repairs: Keep 5-10 extra tiles for potential future repairs or replacements.
